Jets finish early bird tournament with 2-2 record

The Cape Breton Jets stand on the blueline following a 3-0 loss to the Basin Armada at Sackville Arena on Sunday

The Cape Breton Jets finished the Nova Scotia Minor Midget 'AAA' Hockey League early bird tournament with two wins and two losses.

The Jets were defeated in the tournament cross-over game on Sunday morning, losing 3-0 to the Basin Armada at the Sackville Arena in Sackville.

Connor Stone opened the scoring for the Armada at the 21 second mark of the first period, which was followed by goals from Conor Greenfield in the second period and Aaron Deavis in the third period, leading the Armada to the win.

Ty Allison picked up the shutout in goal for the Armada. Jonathan Dolomont was tagged with the loss for the Jets.

On Saturday evening, the Cape Breton squad was edged 4-3 by the ChiroCare Kings.

The Jets took the lead into the first period with a goal by Jason Johnson at the 7:32 of the opening frame, however the Kings responded in the middle stanza with goals coming off the stick of Morgan Rae, Turner Mombourquette and Riley MacDonnell, making the score 3-1.

Cape Breton cut the lead to one at the 16:05 mark of the third period with a goal by Adam Wilson, but the Kings would regain the two-goal lead shortly after with a marker by Blake Whebby.

The Jets made the game interesting at the 3:26 mark of the final frame with Nick Pastuck finding the twine, but that's as close as Cape Breton would come to tying the contest.

Grant Sanford was the winning goaltender for the Kings. Andre LeClair shouldered the loss for the Jets.

Earlier in the day on Saturday, Cape Breton defeated the Valley Wildcats 5-3.

The Wildcats opened the scoring with Leon Bouchard's goal at 13:49 of the first period, but the Jets would answer with three markers by Ryan Chisholm, Matthew MacIntosh and Nick Pastuck to take a 3-1 lead. Valley pulled to within one late in the period with Keegan Cook finding the back of the net, making the score 3-2 heading into the first intermission.

The offense continued in the third period with the Wildcats tying the game with a goal by Connor Deluney, but the Jets would find a way to pull out a win with Pastuck firing home his second of the game to give the Jets a 4-3 lead late in the final period. Xavier Johnson added an insurance goal with 41.8 seconds left in regulation time, making the score 5-3.

Andre LeClair was the winning goaltender between the pipes for the Jets. Mason Kaizer suffered the loss in goal for the Wildcats.

Cape Breton started the early bird tournament with a 6-5 overtime win over the MU Rhino Renovations on Friday.

Nathaniel Fuller had a hat trick, including the game winner, to lead the Jets' offense. Ben Leudy, Adam Wilson and Ryan Chisholm also added single markers for Cape Breton.

Calem McAndrew and Daniel Gillis each fired home a pair of goals for the Rhino Renovations, while Bryson Chapman also chipped in with a goal.

Jonathan Dolomont picked up the win in goal for the Jets. Goaltending information for Rhino Renovations was not available.

The Jets will begin the 2017-18 Nova Scotia Midget 'AAA' Hockey League regular season with a two-game weekend series against the Admirals at the New Waterford and District Community Centre in New Waterford this weekend.

Cape Breton and Admirals will play Saturday at 7:30 p.m., followed by an afternoon game on Sunday 1 p.m.
