The Cape Breton Jets began the 2017-18 Nova Scotia Minor Midget 'AAA' Hockey League regular season with a pair of losses to the Admirals at the New Waterford and District Community Centre this weekend.

The Jets dropped a 5-3 decision to the Admirals on Sunday.

The Admirals got on the board first in the game with Michael McDonald making the score 1-0 at 3:58 of the first period, however the Jets would answer 18 seconds later Xavier Johnson sliding one past Admirals netminder Bryson Uberoi.

The Admirals regained the lead at 10:13 of the middle frame as Achim Duerr-Farrell netted his second goal of the season, but Cape Breton replied before the second period was over as Curtis Novak tied the game with his first goal of the season at 2:33.

McDonald gave the visitors a 3-2 lead at 13:26 of the third period, but again the Jets would answer with a goal coming off the stick of Nathaniel Fuller at 10:40 of the final frame. W. Patrick MacGilivary made the score 4-3 for the Admirals, a goal which proved to be the game winner at 7:05 of the third period. Duerr-Farrell secured the victory with an empty net marker late in the period.

Uberoi was the winning goaltender for the Admirals. Jonathan Dolomont shouldered the loss for Cape Breton.

On Saturday, Cape Breton was defeated 3-2 by the Admirals in a shootout.

Cape Breton opened the scoring at 4:07 of the first period as Fuller scored a shorthanded marker, giving the Jets a 1-0 lead.

The Admirals tied the game on the power play with Luke McOnie firing one past Cape Breton netminder Dolomont at 1:13 of the middle frame, sending the teams to the dressing room tied 1-1.

The visitors took a 2-1 lead with Duerr-Farrell finding the back of the net at 6:27 of the third period, before the Jets evened things up with a Bryce MacKenzie goal shortly after at 3:21 of the final stanza.

The game would go to overtime with both teams having opportunities three-on-three to win their opening game.

In the shootout, Cape Breton would open the scoring, but the Admirals answered to keep the skills competition going past the first three shooters. The Admirals would win the game with a goal in round seven, sneaking past Dolomont on the five-hole.

Adam Fisher was the winning goaltender for the Admirals. Dolomont was tagged with the loss for the Jets.

Cape Breton will continue the regular season on the road next weekend when they play the Valley Wildcats on Saturday at 4 p.m. at the Kings Mutural Century Centre in Berwick. The team will finish the weekend with a game against the ChircoCare Kings at 11 a.m. at the Sackville Arena.

The Jets will return to home ice on Oct. 21 when they host the Dartmouth Voyageurs at 7:30 p.m. at the New Waterford and District Community Centre.
