Johnson leads Jets past Voyageurs on home ice

Jason Johnson's five point performance, including a hat trick, powered the Cape Breton Jets to a 6-5 win over the Dartmouth Voyageurs at the New Waterford and District Community Centre on Saturday.

With the win, Cape Breton improves to 3-1-0-1 on the season and with a Dartmouth loss in Pictou County on Sunday, can move into second place in the Nova Scotia Minor Midget 'AAA' Hockey League standings.

Dartmouth opened the scoring at 8:47 of the first period with Nolan Greenlaw finding the back of the net to give the visitors a 1-0 lead heading into the first intermission.

The Voyageurs took a 2-0 lead early in the second period with Hayden Welburn's goal, before the Jets stormed back with goals by Jason Johnson at 11:19 of the period and Adam Wilson on the power play at 8:57 to tie the game 2-2.

Shortly after, Dartmouth regained the lead with a Josh Crooks marker at 8:13 of the middle frame, followed by Brendon Buchanan power play goal at 7:39, giving the Voyageurs a 4-2 lead.

Cape Breton answered cutting the Dartmouth lead to one with Xavier Johnson netting his  second goal of the season on the power play. Jason Johnson would tie the game at 2:46 of the second period, before completing the hat trick with a power play goal shortly after to give the Jets a 5-4 lead.

Nathaniel Fuller made the score 6-4 with an unassisted goal by 12:08 of the third priod. Dartmouth would make the game interested late in the final stanza with Hunter Canning pulling the Voyageurs to within one at 1:28 of the period, but that's as close as Dartmouth would come to tying the game.

Jonathan Dolomont made 30 saves for his second win of the season. Joshua McCarther stopped 19 of 25 shots in the loss for the Voyageurs.

Cape Breton will return to the ice on Saturday when they wrap up the month of October with a meeting with the Basin Armada. Game time is 7:30 p.m. at the New Waterford and District Community Centre in New Waterford.
