HOCKEY NOVA SCOTIA STATEMENT ON HOCKEY CANADA'S RETURN TO HOCKEY DECISION
Jun. 4, 2020

Hockey Nova Scotia supports Hockey Canada’s decision today to allow each provincial branch to independently sanction hockey activities so long as the branch follows a return-to-play plan that aligns with Hockey Canada’s Return to Hockey Safety Guidelines and with the guidelines laid out by their provincial health authority.

Here in our province, the public health authority has approved the COVID-19 Return to Sport Guidelines that must be followed in any provincial sport organization’s return to sport plans. These guidelines are meant to support organizations in their return to their sport activities, including, but not limited to, lessons, coaching and organized programs, adhering to the Nova Scotia provincial government coronavirus guidelines.

In addition to these provincial public health measures, our sport must also adhere to the measures implemented by Hockey Canada, as well as the facilities in which our game is played.

Since April, we have been engaging with hockey representatives from across the province to develop a plan to get our sport back on the ice.

With a focus on the health of our players and the changing needs of our hockey families, the Hockey Nova Scotia Rebound Plan will provide a comprehensive framework for getting our game back up and running across the province in a safe and secure environment. While these unique circumstances present many challenges, they also present opportunities to create not just a new normal but a new better. We will continue to work collaboratively with our board, councils, leagues, hockey associations, ice facilities, Sport Nova Scotia, and Hockey Canada as we finalize our return plan.

While there is no timeline for a return to hockey, we will seek review and feedback on our Hockey Nova Scotia Rebound Plan later this month. As Hockey Canada CEO Tom Renney said last month, “This is not a race to be first, this is not a race to be first on the ice with whatever it might look like, this is in fact a race to be right.”

The products that we offer may look different than they have in seasons past but our game – and our love of the game – will remain the same.

Yours in Hockey,

Amy Walsh
